Rings: fit before finish

Understand ring fit, band shape, sizing methods and practical gift choices before selecting a style or committing to personalisation.

A ring needs to work at both the knuckle and the place it rests. The letter or number on a chart is only the beginning; band width, internal shape and the wearer’s finger all affect the result.

Choose a sizing method that matches the decision

For an expensive, personalised or difficult-to-resize ring, arrange a professional fitting before ordering. A home measurement can help you ask better questions, but it is a weak foundation for an irreversible choice.

A ring that fits the correct finger can be a reference, provided it is round and its band is comparable to the proposed piece. Our ring-sizing guide explains why measuring the outside diameter, or borrowing a ring from the other hand, can mislead you.

Think about the band as well as the decoration

A broad band, a narrow band and several stacked rings occupy different amounts of finger space. A raised setting may meet gloves or a sleeve; an open shape may catch on fabrics. These are things to try, not details a photograph can settle.

Ask whether resizing is possible for the exact design, how much adjustment is permitted and who would do the work. Do not assume an open-ended “adjustable” ring is intended for repeated bending.

A ring as a surprise

If you cannot establish a reliable size, make the choice together or select a different kind of jewellery. A surprise that requires the recipient to solve a sizing problem is less useful than a thoughtful piece they can comfortably wear.

Personalisation should be the final step. Verify the spelling, size and return terms first. Then read about silver and hallmarks and caring for mixed materials.
