Necklaces: make the proportions work
Choose necklace lengths, chains and pendants with practical checks for the clasp, pendant opening, drop and the clothes you plan to wear.
Choose a necklace as a complete arrangement: chain, clasp, pendant and neckline. A pendant that looks balanced on a short chain may sit very differently on a long one.
Start with where you want it to sit
Use a necklace you already like as a reference. Measure its full length when laid flat, including its clasp, and note where it falls when worn. If you are starting without one, use a soft tape or a length of non-stretch cord to compare positions in a mirror; remove the cord afterwards and measure it flat.
A stated length is a measurement of the necklace, not a promise of where it will fall on every body. Our necklace-length guide explains the details that change the result.
Check the pendant opening
The bail is the part through which the chain passes. The chain’s end fitting may be wider than the chain itself, so a simple chain-width measurement is not enough. Ask for the internal opening and confirm whether the pendant is removable. Never force a fitting through a small opening.
Compare useful details
| Detail | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|
| Chain width and profile | Changes the visual balance and the way a pendant sits |
| Pendant height including bail | Determines the total visible drop |
| Clasp and extension length | Affects ease of fastening and the usable adjustment range |
| Fixed or sliding pendant | Changes whether it can move or be replaced |
| Plain or textured surface | Changes appearance and the care instructions you need |
Layer with a purpose
Start with two lengths that remain visibly separate in the outfit you intend to wear. Check movement by sitting, leaning and turning, rather than judging only a still photograph. If pieces tangle, try wearing fewer chains or changing the combination; an extra accessory is not always the answer.
For a gift, a familiar length and an exchange option are often more useful than an elaborate guess. Explore meaningful motifs once the practical details are settled.
